Inspired by Mount Fuji, Taisei Construction Corporation has completed designs for construction of the world’s tallest building. The X-Seed 4000 (no idea where that came from) would stand at approximately 13,123 feet (4 km), nearly 700 feet (213 m) taller than the real Mount Fuji. The next tallest buildings don’t even break 2,000 feet, how puny! While likely to never be built, the X-Seed would have up to 800 floors, and be capable of housing between 500,000 and 1,000,000 people.

Unlike conventional skyscrapers, the X-Seed 4000 would be required to actively protect its occupants from considerable air pressure gradations and weather fluctuations along its massive elevation. Its design calls for the use of solar power to maintain internal environmental conditions. Some estimate that the cost to construct the X-Seed 4000 structure may be somewhere between $300-900 billion US dollars.

Now I’m no astronomer or anything, but if I learned anything in grade school, it’s that 13,123 feet is pretty much the distance to the sun. Which means that the top floor would be perfect for a natural sauna. You heard it here first, if they end up doing that I want credit.

From the “Everything must have Integrated Speakers” department comes Mi Pillows. If you haven’t guessed by now, they’re pillows that have speakers inside. They cost $60, and are available through Hammacher Schlemmer (pronounced Helter Skelter). You can hook them up to an iPod or any other audio device and, uh, listen to music while you’re trying to fall asleep. The sewn on control patches don’t work though, so that’s a sham. On a side note, be careful what you choose to listen to while sleeping. Because last night I fell asleep to Black Sabbath and when I woke up this morning I owed my soul to the devil and had bitten the head off my daughter’s parakeet.

If you’ve reached the point in life where you honestly think you need designer drain caps in your sink or bathtub then it might be time to step back and ask yourself if there’s something more productive you could be doing. Because quite frankly I don’t think there’s a single being on this planet who needs an analog clock embedded in the top of their drain caps.

The ‘Watch Waste’ as it’s appropriately called is available from Murano House and each piece is hand made in Italy by the finest craftsman who are probably also wondering who’s actually going to buy these. The clocks even have precious stones inset into the face so if a visitor happens to take a close look at the bottom of your sink they’re sure to be impressed by your impeccable taste and attention to detail.

As for the cost, well the website asks you to email them for a quote which roughly translates to “You’re charging how much for that?!”

Your current bionic arm just not cutting it? Tired of just rocking a pirate hook? Well a team at Vanderbilt University has developed a prosthetic arm that’s powered by, that’s right folks, rocket fuel! The team came up with the idea while trying to develop a system that functions with the same strength of a human arm.

Conventional prosthetic arms do not have the strength of their flesh-and-blood counterparts, the reason being the batteries. In order to lift comparable weights, a prosthetic arm would need a massive battery, too large for the prosthesis itself. So (project leader) Michael Goldfarb started thinking about other ways to power the artificial limbs, and came up with the idea of using the monopropellant rocket motor system that the space shuttle uses to maneuver in space.

It’s pretty clear that this team lives by the same credo that I do. When trying to solve a problem, always consider some sort of projectile or explosive material in the final design. I mean, really, who needs a ding-dong anyways when you can have it torn or blown off by your bionic arm.

Now I’m not a big fan of posting the latest camera or phone or what have you unless it has something real unique about it. And well, this one does (even if it is a sham and doesn’t work and is a lie and is stupid). The new Sony Cybershot DSC-T200 has a smile detector. Don’t believe it? You’re not alone. But Sony insists.

Using Sony’s proprietary algorithm, this innovative intelligent auto shutter system responds actively to smiling faces. To start, just choose SmileShutter from Scene Selection, then press the shutter fully on the subject to be taken; the camera automatically detects the smiling face and closes the shutter. To detect the different degrees of smiles by your subject, you can set Smile Level sensitivity to “high” (to detect a faint smile), “medium” (for a normal smile), or “low” (for a hearty laugh).

While this sounds like a very interesting feature, I don’t smile. The batteries will die in the camera and the earth will turn to dust before I do. Smiling is for the weak. Showing that much emotion in a photo basically means your mom dresses you and you’re a monster sissy.

In cell phone news, a man’s Nokia 2115i apparently exploded an hour and a half after he connected it to it’s AC charger at home. Now I’m no pyrotechnician or anything, I’m just a guy who loves fireworks, but based on the movement of the phone from its original position, the damage it took from the blast, and the smoke and soot on the floor, I’m going to throw out my own little theory here. That theory is that someone was trying to kill this man. Probably a disgruntled ex-girlfriend or wife. If it did in fact explode on its own, then wow. And if so, I just ordered one off of ebay for my (soon to be ex) wife. You didn’t read this. I didn’t just say that. These aren’t the droids you’re looking for. Oh, nuts.

Many persons have sleep problems when outside it’s hot. They fall asleep late, they sleep for short periods of time and they wake up many times during the night. Here are 10 tip to follow in order to get your rest even during the hot summer nights.

 1. Go to sleep at about the same hour every night, your body will get used to this and it will prepare itself for sleep.

2. Don’t do any exercises at night because they pump the blood and you’ll not be able to fall asleep.

3. Don’t eat and don’t drink a lot before going to sleep. Dinner must be light and it would be best eaten at least 2 hours before bed time. Digestion delays the sleep and it disturbes it.

4. Avoid nicotin, alcohol and caffeine for at least 5-6 hours before going to sleep. Those stimulents can keep you awake at night.

5. Sleep only during the night. During day time, rest for one hour maximum and don’t ever sleep after 3 p.m.

6. Keep your sleeping room well aired and if it’s possible leave a window slightly open during the night.

7. Before going to sleep go take a warm bath or a reassuring shower, read a book or listen to your favorite music. It will help you fall asleep for sure !

8. Try to apply some moisturizing cream on your shoulders, neck and soles of your feet. You’ll relax in no time and the tension accumulated over the day will disappear.

9. Don’t appeal to drugs or any kind of medicine in order to combat your insomnia. A glace of warm milk or tea, sweetened with honey will help you do the trick.

10. During the night sleep, try to keep your feet on a soft pillow, this will make the tiredness go away and you’ll get a very nice night sleep.

Skype has clarified an earlier statement which appeared to blame Microsoft’s monthly patch for last week’s outage of the VoIP service. Skype had attributed the two-day crash of its service to a large number of Windows users logging on after rebooting their systems to install Microsoft’s monthly updates. The flood of log-on requests effectively launched a denial-of-service attack against Skype’s log-on service.

Owing to a lack of additional information, the justification seemed to blame Microsoft. On Tuesday, however, Skype posted a full admission that sought to clear the software giant.”We do not blame anyone but ourselves,” wrote Skype spokesman Villu Arak in a blog posting. “The Microsoft Update patches were merely a trigger for a series of events that led to the disruption of Skype, not the root cause of it. And Microsoft has been very helpful and supportive throughout.”

A low-rent recidivist con man who targeted eBay customers was jailed for two years on Tuesday. Phillip Shortman, 20, from Cwmbran near Newport in south Wales, was sent to a young offenders’ institution following a conviction for ripping off consumers to the tune of £14,000 and breaching the terms of his probation. Shortman was given an eight-month suspended sentence in January after he was convicted of buying thousands of pounds in stolen fuel cards. He was also found guilty of another £45,000 eBay fraud in 2005, an offence that earned him a year in a detention centre.

This time around the married father-of-two ran bogus auctions for items including 2006 Ryder Cup tickets, a Sony camcorder, and hi-tech mobile phones. He also obtained goods including a £250 laptop and computer parts without payment. Shortman responded to requests for payment for the laptop by sending abusive emails to the seller.

Apple Inc. has signed its first deals with mobile phone operators to offer its iPhone in three of Europe’s largest markets, ending a period of intense negotiations, according to a report in the Financial Times newspaper. Germany’s T-Mobile Deutschland GmbH, France’s Orange SA and Britain’s O2 (UK) Ltd. are reported to have signed exclusive deals to sell the iPhone in their respective markets.

The operators have agreed to give Apple 10 percent of the revenue they generate from the sale of voice and data services for the device, according to the report, which cited unnamed sources. The operators hope to introduce the phone in time for the important Christmas shopping season.

Microsoft is working on a “service in the sky” for unified communications, an executive said Tuesday at the VoiceCon conference in San Francisco. The company’s current focus for the fast-growing trend of combining voice, video, text, and other forms of communication is Office Communications Server 2007, which Microsoft said it will unveil Oct. 16 at a San Francisco event featuring Chairman and Chief Software Architect Bill Gates. But at the same time, it is working on providing these capabilities as a service, said Warren Barkley, a principal group program manager at Microsoft. He mentioned the project in passing at the end of an early-morning panel session at VoiceCon. He didn’t give a timeline for availability.

Barkley cited the need to serve small businesses that increasingly are widely distributed. Unlike large enterprises, they generally lack the IT resources to set up and run a communications system that reaches employees around the world. Microsoft already offers a hosted collaboration platform, LiveMeeting, and is moving to offer applications such as CRM as services. One of the key benefits of unified communications is the ability to integrate voice and other communications into productivity applications, and Microsoft’s move could be aimed at a convergence of the two trends.

If there’s one computing server product every enthusiast and home-user should be excited about, that would not be Windows Server 2003 Datacenter Edition for Itanium-Based Systems, instead it should be Windows Home Server – codename “Q”. Last month, WHS was released to manufacturing aiming for distribution “in the next couple of months” and retail availability “this fall”. The official availability date is now most likely Monday, August 27th 2007.

On the Microsoft Support Lifecycle website, a listing for Windows Home Server states the general availability date as 8/27/2007, and mainstream support retirement date as 10/9/2012. This however does not suggest OEM products such as those from HP will ship then – still expected to come “fall” (September).

In this case, general availability most likely refers to the DVD package for system builders and other OEM channels. If you’re one of those people who want to build your own Home Server, then you should consider bugging your local computer shop for a copy from August 27. Alternatively start your own OEM business.

Details and prices of the first home server running Microsoft Corp.’s Windows Home Server software were posted briefly on several online stores yesterday. Systems are scheduled to ship Sept. 15 at prices starting at $599.

According to listings on such e-tailing sites as Amazon.com, PCMall.com and onSale.com, Hewlett-Packard Co.’s MediaSmart Home Server will be sold in two models at prices of $599 and $749. The pair are identical with the exception of the amount of included storage: the $599 server contains 500GB, while the $759 unit offers 1TB.

Both servers will be powered by a 1.8-GHz Sempron processor from Advanced Micro Devices Inc., and come bundled with HP’s Photo Webshare software, an add-on to Windows Home Server (WHS) that builds a photo-sharing Web site and serves it from the MediaSmart box. None of the for-sales listings spelled out the amount of memory in the servers, however.

Google has started to provide video clips in Google News, a feature it had been widely expected to add to its article search and aggregation site and which Yahoo and AOL already offer in their news sites.

“We’re showing related news videos along with our news articles to give you a broader spectrum of info available,” a Google staffer announced on the Google News blog.

Google News is adding the feature through a collaboration with the company’s YouTube video-sharing site. The clips will come from channels that video news producers have set up on YouTube. Plus, with the YouTube video-playback technology, Google News users will not have to download any clips and they’ll be able to view the videos in any browser, according to Google.

The constellations of Andromeda, Hydra and Vulpecula are now just a mouse click away for amateur star-gazers, following the launch of Google Sky. The tool is an add-on to Google Earth, a program that allows users to search a 3D rendition of our planet’s surface. Sky will allow astronomers a chance to glide through images of more than one million stars and 200 million galaxies. Optional layers allow users to explore images from the Hubble Space Telescope as well as animations of lunar cycles.

“The basic idea is to take Google Earth and turn it on its head,” Ed Parsons, Geospatial technologist at Google told the BBC News website. “So rather than using it to view imagery of the Earth, use it to view imagery of space.” Dr John Mason of the British Astronomical Association, Britain’s largest body for amateur astronomers said: “Light pollution and air pollution is now so bad in many areas that all you can see when you look up is a few dozen stars. If this helps people to realise just what they are missing, it is a jolly good thing.”

Anyone looking at building a new desktop system should not look any further than Intel Core 2 processors, and when time comes to pick a platform you should have Intel’s own P35 chipset in mind as it officially offers 1333MHz FSB support and will be compatible with upcoming 45nm processors. This translates in a fairly ‘future-proof’ platform, with some models currently available supporting DDR3 memory already. But as new as this chipset is, deciding that you want a P35-based motherboard is not enough. Most major manufacturers have already launched several different models powered by the chipset, to give an example, ASUS currently offers a dozen motherboards models all based on the Intel P35.
